Shenzhen Port Seized Over 900 Unqualified Imported Food in 2014

Wine, aquatic products, beverage, nuts, biscuits, cakes and many other food products imported through Shenzhen ports keep increasing sharply. The hidden quality and safety risks can not be ignored. Since end of 2014, CIQ have successively seized 38 unqualified imported food samples , involving red wines, beverage, nuts, biscuits, aquatic products, and some pot foods. The main unqualified reason was about exceeding additives, heavy metals, and microorganism contained in the food.

In fact, since 2014, the disqualification of imported food through Shenzhen port has been quite common. From January to November 2014, the unqualified imported food samples found by CIQ via tests exceeded 900 varieties.

Shenzhen CIQ does strict check on imported food, destroys or returns unqualified food, so as to prevent unqualified food flow into market. Shenzhen CIQ reminds consumers that food imported into China through legal channel shall be pasted Chinese label that meets the requirements of GB7718-2011 General Rules for Labels of Pre-packing Food. Shenzhen Port Detected Exceeding Preservative in Imported Wines

As disclosed by Shenzhen CIQ,  inspection and quarantine officers detected preservative sorbic acid from two grape wine samples of Greece and Spain, the contents exceeded national standards by 23% and 17% respectively. This was the first time that CIQ found exceeding  preservative in grape wine imported from these two countries.

Sorbic acid is a common preservative. During the processing or grape wine, the adding of sorbic acid helps to ensure the cleanliness and sanitation of equipment and containers. Meanwhile, it work as a bacteriostat and sterilization to the microorganism during processing. Adding sorbic acid will increase the production costs, and will slightly affect flavor of grape wine. Long-term drinking of grade wine containing exceeding sorbic acid, will restrain growing of bones to some extent, and will threat heath of kidney and liver.

Shenzhen CIQ officers told us, from 2014 to March.20, 2015, they detected 105 wine samples containing preservative from total 1238 imported wine samples. The adding rate was 8.5%. Therein 6 samples were found unqualified because of exceeding preservatives. The unqualified rate was 0.48%. And before 2014, Shenzhen port did not detect any  disqualification case for preservatives. It suggests that the preservative problem in imported wines, especially in mid-end and low-end wines, could not be ignored. Shenzhen Port Returned USA Chips with Exceeding Colorant

Recently, a batch of chips from USA was imported through Shenzhen Wenjindu port. Shenzhen Wenjindu CIQ did sampling test on it. And the test result show that, one of the chip varieties contained colorant lemon yellow 208mg/kg and  sunset yellow 81.1mg/kg

In this case, lemon yellow and sunset yellow were mixed and used in the chips. And the sum of their proportion  to their maximum usage is greater than 1, which exceeded the limited requirements of  hygiene standards for use of food additives. Wenjindu CIQ had reported risk  early warning and returned these unqualified chips

According to  the relevant our country’s hygiene standards for use of food additives, lemon yellow and sunset yellow can be used in fruit juice, beverage, sparkling drinks, compound wines, candies, and puffed food, but the standards have very strict limitation over their use amount.

When people consume food containing sunset yellow, lemon yellow and other  pigments for a long time or consume too much at a time, certain hurts will be brought to kidney and liver . This news was selected and translated by Seahog Shenzhen Customs Clearance Agent Team
